opit wanted something like this – a thick piece of steel that can be used for baking pizzas in the oven or grilling on the stovetop. She found a piece of 8mm steel plate in the scrap heap and cut out a 455x400mm rectangle with an angle grinder. Then she grinded away the mill scale with the same tool:

The grease channels on one side of the plate were cut using a combination of angle grinder with a thick polishing disk and a pneumatic hand-held router with some boring bits. That’s a job that a routing machine might do in a few minutes..but we didn’t have it set up yet. So she spent several hours sculpting and polishing by hand.

After the first seasoning with some flax oil:

We haven’t tried baking a pizza yet, but it’s an instant grill at home. Might be a little bit thicker (or opit simply has no patience to pre-heat it well), but a steak and some shrimps tasted fine.
